Atlanta Mahjong Society was founded from a belief that American mahjong is more than a game—it is an experience. One that brings people together, fosters meaningful connections, and creates space for both friendly competition and lasting friendships.
As instructors and event hosts, we are passionate about introducing players to the rich tradition of American mahjong while creating an atmosphere that feels approachable, refined, and engaging. From thoughtfully curated social events to league play, every gathering is designed with attention to detail and a commitment to community.

WAVERLY COWART
Co-Founder
Hi there! I’m Waverly Cowart, owner of Mahjong Atlanta and co-founder of Atlanta Mahjong Society, wife to Daniel, and homeschool mom to three amazing children.
I learned to play American Mahjong during a trip to Florida with five of my best friends in 2023, and I was hooked! I returned to Atlanta, bought my first set of tiles, and then taught everyone I knew the game so I could keep playing.
Fast forward three years, and I’ve had the privilege of introducing hundreds of players to mahjong and helping build a thriving community throughout the Atlanta area. What began as a personal passion has grown into an incredible network with memorable tablescapes, meaningful connections, and a shared love of the game. Whether through a lesson or a league, I am honored to share the table with you!
MARGARET MOORE
Co-Founder
I’m Margaret Moore, wife to Ryan, and proud mom to four beautiful children here in the Alpharetta area. I’m so proud to work alongside Waverly as a co-founder of Atlanta Mahjong Society. I wouldn’t be here without her! I learned to play American Mahjong from Waverly last year, and the rest is history!
I immediately fell in love with every aspect of the game, from the beautiful tiles (and all of the fabulous accompanying accessories) to the storied history of the game and, most importantly, the opportunity to gather together with friends in a fun and significant manner.
Hosting and bringing my friends and family together have always been true joys of mine, and I’m thrilled to be able to blend the art of entertaining with the timeless appeal of mahjong.
